The Royal Station Hotel, Carnforth

The Royal Station Hotel is situated in the heart of the small market town of Carnforth, overlooking the historic railway station, made famous as the setting for the 1945 classic Noël Coward film, ‘Brief Encounter’. With the Lake District National Park, the Yorkshire Dales, the Trough of Bowland, the ancient city of Lancaster and Morecambe Bay all on the doorstep, the Royal Station is the perfect place to stay if you’re planning to explore this beautiful corner of England.

This fine old building was established in 1880 as Carnforth Station steamed into local history. Together with the expansion of Carnforth Junction came the need to provide accommodation for overnight passengers travelling countrywide.

The original gaze of the hotel, the curved front door, was fixed onto the emerging station. The town thrived as the railway transported increased business into the local community. The Station Hotel provided a faithful haven for the accompanying travellers. Local historians record that it was considered one of the finest hotels in the North West. Indeed in 1900, it became the ‘Royal’ Station Hotel in recognition of the fact that the Duke of York, later to become George V, availed himself of the hotel’s hospitality during a shooting trip.

The building hauntingly retains many of its original features. On the first floor is Victoria Hall with its high, vaulted ceiling. Not only has it provided the venue for countless weddings and local celebrations, it is also the site of the first cinema in Carnforth. Later, the popular Roxy Picture House was housed opposite, in what is now the local Co-op building.

Like the town and the railway, the hotel has flourished and faded but has continued to open its doors to us all for over a century. Like the town and the railway it has found a new beginning, a new future. One that offers another generation of visitors an encounter that need never be brief.

“Great place to stay for the lakes”

stayed in room 19 it is a smallish well presented en-suite but for just me and the wife it was idea, stayed 3 nights and had 3 great nights sleep the bed was perfect they have a good selection of breakfast to choose from followed by a full English, which is very good, we will be visiting again. Henry on the reception is a really nice , helpful person and I think he is a great asset to the hotel.

“Very pleasant overnight stop”

Most welcoming and pleasant staff. Very helpful. Room was very large overlooking the station. Recently decorated room (21) Modern With powerful shower. Warm bar and restaurant with exceptionally good food.

“Tapas restaurant”

Fantastic food and very warm welcome and attentive staff. The decor of the restaurant is lovely. The choice of tapas is exceptional and there is plenty to choose from. There was not one dish which wasn’t beautifully prepared and didn’t taste delicious.

This is a very different way of dining as the food comes out dish by dish (and there was a bit of a wait between each one) so eating is much slower than usual experiences of dining out. It’s a more social way of eating and may confuse those who want to be quickly satisfied by one big plate of food. Don’t be mistaken though, you’ll leave full up and will enjoy the experience very much.

The cost came to £80 for three of us, which included two beers and three glasses of wine, so not bad at all. Highly recommended.

“Nice hotel, wonderful staff and food”

stayed in a room on the top floor of this lovely town centre hotel, quite a bit of free parking nearby, had a twin room though we had booked a double but didn't bother us. Room looked like it had been recently refurbished or even a new one totally, great en-suite bathroom.

What really makes this place is the quality of the food. We went into the "normal" restaurant for burger and cheese pie, both were really good. My wife said the burger was one of the best she had ever had. In the evening we went to the Tapas, which was absolutely brilliant and the room itself is gorgeous, finished to a high standard. Recommend the croquettes (blue cheese sauce), patatas bravas and the squid.

Breakfast in the morning was also really good, great selection of cereals, yoghurts and fruit (raspberries & strawberries), followed by a solid English breakfast and toast.

Staff friendly and efficient throughout.

“Last minute weekend away”

Booked last minute and had a great time. Room/bathroom/hotel was lovely and clean but what made the weekend was the staff, they couldn't do enough for us from booking taxis to late night snacks/entertainment- really made us feel welcome, from Harry on reception to the lads behind the bar, the owners were like long lost friends, we will definitely be recommending to others and returning ourselves quite soon. Unforgettable weekend.

“Great value, great welcome, fabulous food”

We booked by walking into reception and asking for a room that same day - Valentines Day. Maggie at reception offered us a choice of 3 rooms and showed them to us. She then made a space for us to dine in the hotel's fabulous dining room with a cosy fire burning in the restored fireplace. The food was excellent; the hotel seems to concentrate on a limited menu of high quality dishes that can be freshly cooked to order. Their apple frangipani is an outstanding example of how this can be achieved. All the staff were friendly, chatty and helpful; nothing seemed to be too difficult. The room price was very competitive; if you take two excellent breakfasts into account, this was cheaper an the Premier Inn's quoted room price for that night, and much, much better value.
