Situated close to the river Wharfe and part of the Duke of Devonshire’s Chatsworth Estate, Howgill Lodge is a hidden gem nestled in the heart of Wharfedale. It is beautifully terraced to take advantage of the stunning views and the sound of running water from the many natural springs promotes a true feeling of well being and tranquillity. The largely unspoilt landscape is dotted here and there with traditional stone barns, typical of Yorkshire farming life, take yourself back to the days of James Herriot, surrounded by some of the most beautiful countryside in the UK. Wander through the most charming and picturesque towns and villages, set amidst the sweeping hills.
At Howgill we offer electric and non electric pitches and can accommodate both tents and caravans. The site benefits from a central amenity block with hot showers, covered wash up area, coin operated washing machine and tumble dryer. Several smaller toilet and shower facilities are located at various points around the site.
If you would prefer a more luxurious stay, our timber lodges are just the thing for you! Sleeping up to 6 they have 2 bedrooms, a shower room, fully fitted kitchen and spacious open plan living/dining area, featuring a log burner 32” Smart TV and wifi. Outside on your private patio you will find a log fired hot tub, a firepit with built in pizza oven and a picnic table. The lodges are situated at the top of the site with exceptional views over the valley. We are delighted to welcome Audrey, Dorothy and Ethel our 3 gorgeous alpaca girls. You will find them happily grazing in their paddock next door to the camping field.
In a completely rural setting yet with plenty to do nearby, when it comes to going out and about, our family run site is close to a wide variety of delightful places to visit. Bolton Abbey, Barden Bridge, Embsay Steam railway, Skipton Castle, Black Sheep brewery, Stuffold fairy and pixie adventure, Aysgarth Falls, Stump Cross Cavern and Ripley Castle are all easily accessible from the campsite.
Howgill is surrounded by wonderful scenery with many beautiful walks and cycle routes close by. It offers the perfect base for exploring, whether it’s a gentle stroll to the nearest pub or a memorable adventure to the top of Simons Seat, the gritstone summit of Barden Fell and one of the most popular of the lower hills in the Yorkshire Dales. Head back through the Valley of Desolation, green and vibrant with two spectacular waterfalls and an abundance of wildlife. The varied countryside, encompasses woodland, riverside, moorland and rocky crag, characteristic of the exceptional beauty and distinctively rugged, often dramatic landscape of the area. For keen cyclists, we are close to the Tour de France and Tour de Yorkshire cycling routes and within easy reach of many miles of off road cycling.
Our nearest pup is the Craven Arms at Appletreewick serving fine ales and good food, slightly further away is the renowned Devonshire Arms at Bolton Abbey only a few minutes’ drive from the campsite. The local towns of Burnsall, Grassington, Skipton and Ilkley offer good opportunities for shopping, eating and drinking with many cafes, bars and restaurants.
And if you want to make your trip extra special, the Brownie Barn is right next door, selling fresh barista coffee, smoothies, milkshakes and of course their famous freshly baked, delicious brownies. Sit outside admiring the great views a perfect way to finish your day’s walking or cycling adventure.
