Thornton Lodge, Leyburn

Located close to Hawes and Aysgarth Falls, in the Yorkshire Dales National Park, Thornton Lodge provides a peaceful haven amid fine period features and modern comforts. Set in 13 acres of grounds and pasture a short distance outside the hamlet of Thornton Rust and close to Salmon beats on the River Ure, this lovely old house offers a comfortable and welcoming escape from the bustle of todays hurried lifestyles. Please check out our rooms if you're looking for a relaxed stay in very agreeable surroundings. From the high quality sprung beds, egyptian cotton bedding, white company toiletries, varied in room hot drink choices, modern ensuite bathrooms and tasteful decor you can easily see why this has remained one of North Yorkshires highest rated getaways.

Thornton Lodge is not your usual b&b - most of the ones around here are of the 3 guest bedroom type with owners sharing the comunal space some of the time. Here we have two distinct parts of the house, the guest end being the entire space shown in our photograph and our domestic quarters being the self contained west wing, coach houses and walled garden where I keep my hens and ducks.

Whilst I have 9 guest bedrooms it is rare for me to have more than 6 rooms occupied at any one time and during the week it is often around 3-4 rooms of guests. I have 2 rooms I reserve for single occupancy and one room only bookable by people with mobility difficulties.

I tend to chatter with guests at breakfast time to make sure they get the most from their day (if that's what they want) and chat again with those who choose to have supper at the house. Other than that I leave my guests alone to enjoy the peace of their surroundings.

I am closed during the winter - it gets too cold and the lane can be a little inaccessible without 4 wheel drive and after having to dig the car park out on my own for some people who stayed one February in a car barely road worthy I decided not to risk being open in bad weather.

So, if you are they type of person who likes to stay in lovely surroundings but would prefer something less formal than an hotel without having to fend for yourself completely by staying in a self catering cottage, I think you might like what Thornton Lodge can offer so please do take a look at our rooms to see which might become your personal favourite.

On this page we have details of the nine bedrooms at Thornton Lodge. If you click on the individual photo’s you will be taken to a page with more details on the individual room. We believe that whether you are looking for a bed and breakfast in Wensleydale to relax and explore the countryside, a romantic Yorkshire Dales retreat or a North Yorkshire Guest house in an idylic setting you will find a room to suit at Thornton Lodge.

Please note that our prices for the rooms are 'from'. The rates are for all stays of 2 nights or more. Single nights are only bookable directly with me and are dependent on my workload. I am generally unable to offer one night stays on a Saturday night.

My accessible room is ONLY for people who have a genuine need for it. There are 6 rooms for couples so please do not book the accessible room if you don't have some form of mobility issue.

“Wonderfully knowledgeable hostess”

We arrived at Thornton Lodge a little later than we had been expected and Vanessa took the trouble to contact us by text to say that she would be away for a short time but back soon. She was back before we arrived and by the front door waiting to welcome us. She gave us a free upgrade to another...

“Total tranquility”

Stayed 3 nights with my wife. Large, elegant country house in a very quiet hamlet off the main road. Huge bedroom very tastefully decorated and excellent modern bathroom with bath and shower. Fridge in the room with fresh milk (not UHT) much appreciated. Endlessly quiet only disturbed by the occasional birdsong and distant bleating of sheep. Big choice for breakfast...
