The Masons Arms
The Masons Arms, York
The Masons Arms is an independent and privately operated traditional British pub. The pub was built in 1935 in Tudor style as a flagship project by the local Tadcaster Tower Brewery. The interior of the Masons Arms provides a setting for some genuine Gothic features including oak paneling from York Castle and the fireplace from the Castle gatehouse.
It is the high quality of these features and the pub’s enviable reputation for its fine food and hand pulled ales that contributes most to the pub’s special character. The Masons Arm’s enviable position overlooking the City walls and Gatehouse and with a secluded beer terrace overlooking the River Foss make it a popular venue with locals and tourists alike.
The Masons Arms is ideally located close to many of York’s major attractions. Whilst maintaining a tranquil stay in our private courtyard next to the river Foss.
We are only 15 minutes from the railway station and buses to the North Yorkshire Moors and east coast resorts stop nearby. Alternatively take a drive out to the various museums, stately homes and other points of interest out of town…

Visited on a Friday lunchtime for lunch with 3 elderly relatives. The setting was lovely - a sunny table at the front of the pub in this beautiful Yorkshire village, the food delicious and the waitress was so helpful in looking after us and the needs of the elderly. Highly recommended
”Great Sunday lunch”
Had the Sunday lunch and all good. I had a fish which was very much to my liking, dry and flaky. Great welcome from the staff. Don’t be put off by the frontage. Warm and welcoming inside.
”An amazing find 10 minutes walk from the city centre”
We stayed here last Friday in one of the 4 rooms available to guests. A lovely renovated room with its own access from the car park that was very comfortable and right at the side of the river - nothing nicer than sitting out there at 8am with a cuppa!! But that said, it was the friendliness and kindness of the owners and staff that really made the break so enjoyable. We were there for the races (a short taxi ride) and wanted to go up into York for our evening meal. After being made very welcome for drinks in the pub, this was no problem and gave us directions. On returning we went for a nightcap that turned into 3 or 4!! Music playing and a very lively group of guys in led to a lot of laughter and fun with Gillian and Terrence joining in. No stuffiness and standing on ceremony here. I can honestly say that we had the most fun in ages. No regular breakfast served here, but we were told that if we wanted to wait until 11, when the chef came in, we could have a full English - hence the 5 star rating. It was delicious and Terrence knocked on our door when it was ready, told us to leave our packing until later - no rush!! Amazing service, lovely breakfast, comfortable stay in a lovely room by the river - nothing missing. Thank you to you and your staff - we will be back. York can keep its big hotels in future!!
”Fantastic Pub and Atmosphere”
Terry is a fantastic land lord , so hospitable to all his guests, even a rowdy lot from Scotland. This is a must visit when you come to York.
Stayed here recently with my wife whilst visiting York for the horse racing. Had booked it many months previous and on arrival was told it had changed hands. I can only speak as I find, but must say our stay was wonderful. Terry and his wife were wonderful hosts. We stayed in a small annexe to the rear of the pub which was very compact but had been refurbished and had everything you needed. As the new chefs have only recently started, they weren’t officially doing breakfasts, although Terry said if you hang on until 10am they will cook one for you (£7.50). We were in no hurry so did just that. Wow, it kept us going all day - amazing. Came back after races had pre-ordered a steak and fish meal from the lads in kitchen and both myself and my wife thoroughly enjoyed it. Spent couple hours with the landlord his wife and a couple of locals in the evening - all in all a thoroughly great stay. Thanks Terry and Julie and thanks too, to the new chefs and the cleaning lady who was a lovely lady who looked after us. We will be back.
